1851 to the present · Light, silver and time

Before film rolls and digital sensors, a photograph could begin with a freshly poured plate. Wetplate photography turned light into a physical image through a demanding, hands-on process. That same craft is at the heart of Tintypeman today.

1851 — A new way to capture detail

English photographer Frederick Scott Archer published his wet collodion process in 1851. Photography was already established through methods such as the daguerreotype and the paper-negative calotype. Archer’s glass negatives offered fine detail and shorter exposures than the calotype, helping wetplate become a defining photographic process of the nineteenth century.

Glass also provided a negative from which multiple paper prints could be made. Wetplate history is therefore about both treasured individual objects and images that could be shared more widely.

Why did the plate have to stay wet?

The photographer coated a plate with collodion, sensitised it in a silver nitrate bath, then exposed and developed it while the coating was still wet. The working window was short. Out in the field, photographers brought a portable darkroom, along with their camera, plates and chemistry.

This was photography with a physical rhythm: prepare, pour, expose, develop. The marks around a plate’s edges can still reveal something of the hands that made it.

One process, three different forms

Glass negatives

A negative image on clear glass could be used to make positive prints on paper. This combination brought crisp detail to portraiture and landscape photography.

Ambrotypes

A faint negative on glass appears positive when seen against a dark backing. Ambrotypes were often protected in small cases and became a more affordable alternative to daguerreotype portraits.

Tintypes

Despite the name, historical tintypes were made on dark-coated iron, not tin. The image appears positive against that dark surface. The finished plate itself is the photograph, rather than a negative intended for paper printing. Relatively inexpensive and less fragile than glass, tintypes helped bring portrait photography to a wider public.

1850s–1870s — A world recorded on plates

Wetplate photographers recorded families, public figures, buildings and landscapes. The process also left an extraordinary documentary record: photographs made by Mathew Brady and his associates during the American Civil War, and images from nineteenth-century surveys of the American West, survive in major archives today.

Behind those images was considerable effort. A location photograph meant transporting a working darkroom as well as a camera.

1880s — Dry plates change the pace

Gelatin dry plates largely replaced wet collodion in mainstream photography during the 1880s. They could be prepared ahead of time and developed after exposure without the same immediate wetplate deadline. Photography became more practical away from the darkroom, although older processes continued alongside newer ones.

Today — The craft lives on

At Tintypeman in Grantville, Victoria, wetplate remains a living photographic practice. A portrait session is a chance to experience the making of a photograph as well as its result: a plate prepared by hand, an exposure made with intention, and an image revealed in the darkroom.
